What’s disability to me? Mia’s story.

29 Comments 20 November 2011

The World Report on Disability is a major WHO/World Bank publication which will be launched on 9 June 2011 at the United Nations in New York. The report explores current evidence about disability and highlights what works to improve the lives of people with disabilities. One chapter of the report highlights the importance of education as a means to promote participation. To continue our exploration of “What’s disability to me?”, we invited Mia Farah, a woman with intellectual disabilities from Lebanon, to tell us about the problem of negative attitudes in schools, and to introduce us to the concept of self-advocacy. What sorts of projects should our disability advocacy and education group do on the college campus?

1 Comment 16 November 2011

Question by Jewel: What sorts of projects should our disability advocacy and education group do on the college campus?
I’m a member of TACTICS, a college groups for disability advovacy and education. I’m looking for ideas on projects that we can do to advacte for various disabilities and/or educate people about people with disabilities on campus.

What sorts of projects do you think we should do? We do a fun facts table where we talk about famous people with disabilities, and in the spring we’ll have a panel of people discussing disability education. What else can we do?

How about doing some ADA access surveys on campus or in the local community? Do a voter registration drive – education people about voter’s rights and accessible voting machines.

What do you think? Answer below!
